Comments from Groups:

The group enjoyed this book though a number found the beginning and ending rather contrived. Nelson 058

It is an easy read and introduced Greece in a descriptive way. Christchurch 353

We did feel that aspects of the plot were weak but these were compensated for by the excellence of the historical setting and we learned a lot. An easy and engaging read. Dunedin 029

The majority of the group loved this book. A couple felt that the story was a bit too 'nice' and more could have been made of the history side. A good discussion ensued. Papamoa 001

Enjoyed by the group but not loved. People didn't like her writing style but learned a lot from the historical aspects.

It was agreed that it was an enjoyable and easy read. Historical aspect especially notable, but also the life, people and seamstresses' role very interesting. Good descriptive passages. A little criticism of repeated ideas and ending.

We had a wide-ranging discussion but were evenly divided as to those who enjoyed the book and those who were rather disappointed. We found the history of Thessaloniki so interesting and tragic, but felt that the characters were poorly drawn against the detailed background. The rich were bad and the poor were good, but we didn't learn much about the cultures of the different groups. We also discovered that most of us had been to Greece at some time, and had a lot of fun sharing experiences.

Mostly people liked the historical aspect but some found it too much. Found the writing a bit "plodding".

Every member thoroughly enjoyed 'The Thread' and will read other titles by the same author. It is very well researched and written. We all learned a lot and had a great discussion about that era and the various ethnic groups in the story. Highly recommended.

We all enjoyed the book which was entertaining and informative. We engaged in a lively discussion about class, gender, marriage and communism while trying to answer the questions. One reader thought the characters were too one dimensional.

An easy read, historically correct, about families who suffer tragedies and political unrest in their lives, yet overcome difficulties and build up relationships across both economic and religious divides. Our group enjoyed the book, became involved with the characters and learned much about Greece in the process.
