Set in 1930s Ceylon. Sam Obeysekere, born to a privileged family and educated at Oxford, returns home to practice law. When he is approached to give his thoughts on the Hamilton Case, a scandalous murder that shakes the upper echelon of island society, he is flattered by the request and declares an Englishman guilty of the crime. Comments from Groups: On our 'Best Book' read list! Beautifully written and so descriptive. It deserved a second reading to gain full value. Some found it disjointed and hard to follow as there were so many characters. Diamond Harbour 001 Excellent book with plenty of interesting characters. You felt and smelt the whole atmosphere - and there's a bit of a twist too!! Something for everyone. Whangarei 001 Fantastic descriptive language - you could see, hear and even smell the scenes. The book gives an insight into the recent troubles in Sri Lanka, portraying the decay in the physical environment, society and in individuals. Some found it difficult to read and tragic; others couldn't put it down and found it fascinating. Auckland 015 We felt this was a good Book Club title as it provoked good and varied discussion. Excellent notes - particularly well researched and stimulating. Lower Hutt 008 This book polarised the group - opinions were divided between those who really enjoyed it and those who found it really difficult to read. Christchurch 050 Most enjoyed the book, particularly the style of writing. It led to a fascinating discussion on Sri Lanka and life there in colonial times through to independence. Wellington 007
