Comments from Groups: Our group had mixed feelings about the book. We had a lively discussion on whether literary merit overcame distaste for the subject, and also about Nabokov and his own experiences and life. Nelson 009 The majority of the group did not like this book for its subject matter, and said it made them feel distressed and grubby. Those who read the whole book said the writing, word plays, scene setting and scenic description were amazing. One member was exceedingly angry that it was passed off (in the notes) as a love story, when it was in fact a story of gross abuse of a child. Some said they would search out other Nabokov books to read. Picton 001 Brilliantly written book about obsession. Mixed reactions due to the main character and his abuse of the girl. Nelson 018 A true work of art, and a wonderful discussion ensued. Excellent notes. Havelock North 001 We all felt decidedly squeamish about the theme of 'Lolita'. However, we concluded that it's brilliantly written and full of condensed, poetic language. It is rich in allusions, satire and a humour that borders at times on the hilarious.... Katikati 001
