Comments from Groups:

With the exception of one, we all loved this book. We reckon this is the best book we have ever had, thank you. We would like to buy this book and have bought one of her other books. Discussed the book for most of the night. Loved it. Ashburton 016

This book provided one of our best discussions we have had - so much in it. All agreed a bit puzzled at what the author was trying to convey though. Still, an enjoyable read. Nelson 027

Most enjoyed the rambling style of the author. An easy read. Much discussion about the plausibility of some of her characters, and about family on both sides of the world wars, and changing sides in between. Dannevirke 001

Everyone loved this book, it was the best of the year. So many stories all tied together, lovely characters - a real hit. Not one of us would have picked it off a shelf, so even better. Oamaru 005

A solid read. Some of us found there was too much detail in the book. Most enjoyed the colourful characters, and the writing style. Invercargill 015

Long and complicated challenge. Appreciated the descriptive prose. Some felt it needed editing. Sparked lively discussion.

We got this book based on the recommendations from other book groups. But although it was liked by us, we didn't "rave" about it, and thought it had quite dark themes.

Those who read it enjoyed it. Small print and intense style prevented some from sticking with it.

We enjoyed this book - a most interesting insight into the times and courage of the immigrants who travelled to America.

Some of us just loved this book - more like an amazing 'painting' than a great story perhaps. The writing style was so good, but other readers were annoyed by it.

The group was divided between those who found it a challenging read and didn't finish it, and those who loved her writing style and were captivated. It led to the most interesting and lively discussion we'd ever had. Such an epic story.

Mixed opinions - disturbing story, slow plot, detailed descriptions. At the end the story it became clear as to why Delphine was the way she was.

A very unusual and rather weird book, but it made for an interesting discussion!
