The geisha, Sayuri, narrates the tale of her life; her origins as an orphaned fishing-village girl in 1929, the auction of her mizuage (virginity) as a teenager, and her reminiscent old age as the distinguished mistress of the patron of her dreams. Golden captures a vivid, now-vanished world in Japanese culture. [Small font]

Comments from Groups: This was a great book for our group. Although some of us felt it glamorised the role of the geisha, we were surprised at the talents Sayuri showed in her performances to the men she entertained. We were shocked that the women were so subservient to men. Palmerston North 004 Great read, enjoyed by all the book club members. Hastings 007 " I think it will resonate with me for the rest of my days'. Christchurch 230 We all enjoyed reading it, and were very interested in the details of a geisha's training. All agreed the last 100 pages detracted from the quality of the book... Turangi 001 A memorable and fascinating novel. We felt the heroine made genuine, in-depth and perceptive observations. It worked as a romantic novel, and the 'masculine' author was not discernable. We have decided being a geisha is not the life for us!! Matamata 001
