Comments from Groups:

Very diverse opinions of the book. All agreed very good characterisation. Slow to start with. Portrayed Polish immigrant family well. Napier 020

An interesting split of opinion. Those who liked it remarked on the striking descriptions, the pace and readability. Others were unconvinced by the characters and setting. Wellington 001

An entertaining, quirky story. Paihia 003

We were most impressed at the imaginative and novel construction of the novel...by the evening's end we had a new appreciation of the many nuances embodied in the word 'loss'. Te Pahu 001

We didn't really enjoy this book. Kept expecting something else to happen but it didn't.

Excellent book, thoroughly enjoyed by the members, and prompted a lot of discussion. The notes were very good as well.

This was a complete surprise! Most of us had never heard of the book, or the author, and we loved it. It was quirky, unusual, and led to some interesting discussion.

The group was split - those who enjoyed the quirky characters , talking bullet and vagaries of fate - and those who found it meandering and impenetrable.

This book generated a lot of discussion! We were all firmly in the "liked it/loved it" camp, and evenly divided as to whether it was the characterisation or the prose that was most admired.

All managed to finish this book, but all of us found the first half extremely hard going. Thank goodness for the second half!

We all found the story hard to get into but in the end all loved it. Her characterisation and prose are superb. The plot was unusual but created much discussion though we felt it was a story in two halves. Very enjoyable read from a brilliant writer.

Everyone enjoyed the book. We were particularly taken with the descriptions of Alaska, and the characters in that part of the book. All really pleased with the ending with the best outcome for Moses.
