Comments from Groups:

Gone Girl was really enjoyed by all but one group member. A real "page turner" with some unexpected twists. It also generated a good discussion on the characters motivations, on "perfect" relationships, media coverage of events and our expectations of the "correct" emotional responses from victims. Christchurch 299

Book is a real page-turner. Not exactly a thriller but definitely an enticing read. Interesting style of writing. Ending unexpected... though more real than the likely alternative. Hamilton 042

Book certainly captivated the members. They were intriqued. Had a grand discussion. Matamata 001

A mixed reaction to this book. some disliked it becasue of the themes and language used and because the characters became so evil. Others liked the clever way the plot was developed with the unexpected twists as the lies were revealed which held the readers interest. Cromwell 003

A very skilled writer with a talent for holding together a very complicated and intricate sadistic tale. None of the characters were particularly endearing!

There was a lot of discussion about this book. Some loved the book and others hated it because of the characters.

Well-written and intriguing book, enjoyed by most of our group. Not a lot of warmth for some of the characters but the plot was very clever and unexpected. One comment in discussion: "She got away with it!"

Wonderful piece of writing, rich in detail and plot, disturbing in content. It led to very interesting discussion, and the theme of 'cool girl' debated at length!

Most of the group enjoyed the book and found it hard to put down. We thought the characterisation was well done - although wondered how authors conjure up such unsavoury characters! Those who had seen the film didn't read it again - they knew the ending!

We loved it! We thought it was a really gripping thriller which kept us hooked. We had a lot of discussion about the characters of Amy and Nick, the influence of their parents, and the grip they had on each other. Plus the the fact that Nick was stuck with Amy at the end. Fantastic!

No one liked the characters, but the three who read it to the end were fascinated by the twists and turns of the main characters' thought processes. What an amazing author to have thought out the plot and all its complexities, and to have managed it all the way to the end. It was well worth reading in its entirety, and so much better than the movie which didn't do it justice at all.

We all thought the main characters were dreadful! But we loved the plot's cleverness...couldn't wait to see how it would end!
