Authors: Jonasson, Jonas
Genre: Fiction
Pages: 396
Year: 2012
Publisher: Hesperus Press
Language: English
Description: And if that's not amazing in itself, there's more to follow. Allan Karlsson goes AWOL on the occasion of his 100th birthday party setting forth on a hair-raising adventure. It turns out that this is not such an unusual occurrence for him as he has been present at many of the important events of the 20th century. In fact, Churchill, Franco, Mao, Truman and Stalin, to name a few, have cause to be grateful to him.

Refreshing and original, Allan's escapades will have you chuckling as you reflect on the history and politics of last century.

Comments from Groups:

This book was good lighthearted fun - the perfect end of the year book. Nelson 023.

Superbly humorous and enjoyed immensely by the majority of the group. It was a pleasure to laugh aloud at the absurdities and weird turns of event in the whole novel. Ohope 001

Farcical, a little absurd, wonderful read of history with a nonsensical story around it. Murchison 001

Nearly all loved it. Very funny. Farcical and far-fetched but with very good insight into human behaviour. Martinborough 001

This funny light-hearted yarn was both silly and quirky but appealing. Some thought the characters were shallow while others felt the story had an underbelly of meaning. We agreed the story needs reflection and possbily a re-read. We loved exploring the concept of escapism. Rotorua 010.

A most enjoyable book; the antics of a 100 year old man were an inspiration to us all. We laughed out loud at quite a few moments in the book.

Much enjoyed by the majority. The author managed to keep you laughing and learning some history, as well as keeping your attention on the completely impossible plot. Very cleverly done!

The majority of members really enjoyed this book. They found it funny and easy to read. It was informative about world events and might be good for young adults to learn history from. Some thought the book was silly.

Just a small group met this month. Of these all but two found this book amusing and clever. The others, including myself, found it unappealing.

A well-written romp through the life and times of a 100 year old man escaping from a retirement home on the day of his birthday. The characters he meets on the way, and the adventures he relates are very colourful and well tempered with imagination and fanciful memories. A good escape read.

Most of the group enjoyed the humour and satire of the book, and it provoked good discussion on age and making changes in one's life.

Loved this book! Very clever, and very funny. Found the alternating between past and present a little confusing at times.

Very well liked, did drag a little towards the end. Created some good discussion on aging and expectations of the behaviour of older people and the way aged care homes cater to them.

A small meeting, but all who came had enjoyed it. One or two agreed that it was a 'laugh out loud' book.

Some loved it, some found the ridiculousness of it too much. In general, an interesting history lesson.

Most of us loved this - stupid but clever. Meeting night was like a laugh feast of each one trying to highlight details while laughing at the same time. Like a mad child's story, it is in keeping with a 100 year old's childlike behaviour.

Easy read, highlights that not all circumstances forced upon them will work and if you don't like it there are other options to explore - you just need some like-minded people. We enjoyed the idea of escape and found it quite funny.
