Title: Red Notice
Authors: Browder, Bill
Genre: Non Fiction
Pages: 479
Year: 2015
Language: English
Description: International financier Bill Browder is one of Vladimir Putin's least favourite people. What on earth did he do to earn such disapproval? It wasn't so much his reaction to his highly successful investment in post-Soviet Russia being derailed by government chicanery, but rather Browder turning into a relentless human rights campaigner, exposing corruption at the highest level. Going on to lobby US lawmakers to avenge the imprisonment, torture and death of his Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, didn't help either ...

Fast-paced and direct, this real-life thriller of high stakes and vast fortunes is also an intriguing memoir of a high flier bent on bringing about justice. [Larger font]

Good discussion. A very interesting and quite shocking book which revealed to us how the system operates in Russia.

This was one of the most popular books our book club has read. An interesting story by an interesting man set in an interesting culture. The author was driven by success first, and then justice, a flawed but good man who worked hard and was courageous in the face of corruption and danger. All but one of us gave it 4.5 or above.

A fascinating insight into the world of high finance in the 1990s, Russian politics, and human rights atrocities. We loved the transition from being a wheeler dealer to being a strong advocate for human rights when Bill Browder could have just walked away. An incredible story.

Browder took a difficult subject and made it very accessible. Provoked good discussion about financial literacy and the situation in Russia. Opened our eyes, thought provoking.

Unanimous score of 5! I cannot recall that happening before. All agreed the book was gripping and fascinating. Great insights into both the way the Russian autocracy operates and the machinery of the US government. Very topical given current conflicts.

A very good read for our group and several of our partners also read it. Some of us had travelled in Russia and had much to discuss.

Very readable, and generated a lot of discussion. Provided some interesting insights into hedge fund capital management for non-financial people, as well as the US political system, and the challenges of geo-politics. An easy book to read - very gripping - and at times we had to remind ourselves this wasn't actually a Russian spy-novel but a true account.

An eye-opening and very interesting account of the lengths the Russian government will go to to annihilate opposition. Bill Browder is a very brave man.

The Group very much enjoyed this book introducing to a murky world unknown to us. Some found it a difficult read at times. It was interesting to chart his passage from outright capitalist oblivious of the human issues, to outright human rights and financial injustice advocate. It gave us all an unpleasant picture of the realities of life in Russia and the authoritarian regime of Putin.

Our group had a great discussion on this book. Comments like: - just had to keep reading; horrified at the control and corruption; the power and control of the Oligarchs; informative, terrifying and shocking. Enjoyed it thoroughly. Brought to light the current situation in the Eastern Bloc and Russia/Ukraine. Described as "a book everyone should read, but many will wish they hadn't"!

Very captivating and eye-opening. Provoked good discussion about the protagonist - was he completely innocent or should he shoulder some blame for his involvement

All members thoroughly enjoyed this read although it was a LONG read! VERY topical at this present time. A lot of discussion was held on the author and his life. Very interested to read his next publication. This book was an extremely good 'history lesson', and we all learnt from it.

A gripping read, particularly the second half which detailed the corruption rife in Russia and the legal fight to obtain justice for the author's friend. It reads like a popular thriller but makes you stop and think when you realise that this is real life.
