Description: Heidi Wood's well-meaning intervention, offering refuge to teenager Willow and her baby Ruby from the streets of Chicago, invites the observation that 'no good turn goes unpunished'. As the arrangement shifts from temporary to permanent, the events that unfold will have a profound effect on everyone in the household, including Heidi's husband and daughter.

With its multiple narrators, underlying misfortunes and unexpected twists and turns, this tautly plotted psychological thriller is both riveting and moving. [Small font]

An easy read with broad appeal. We didn't all love the writer's style, but we all appreciated the pace and enjoyed the story.

An easy read and everyone seemed to read it. Not great discussion. Some dissatisfaction with the ending - not really tied up with Heidi's family.

Our group was split between those that really enjoyed it, and others that struggled with the writing style - the 3 narrators made it a confusing read and unenjoyable.

We thought this a mediocre read, but we all felt that the ending was worth reading the whole book for.

An intriguing story with lots of twists and turns until the end. Characters well portrayed. Most of the group enjoyed the book but some found it somewhat 'disturbing'. It was hard to put down once one was immersed in the story.
