Title: Out Of The Shadows - The Life of Millicent Baxter
Authors: Griffith, Penny
Genre: Non Fiction: New Zealand
Pages: 211
Year: 2015
Language: English
Description: Millicent Macmillan Brown was so taken with Archie Baxter's stand as a conscientious objector, that she sought him out, and the rest - as they say - is history. Although having a renowned husband was to be followed by an even more famous son (the celebrated poet James K. Baxter), Millicent's life was also conspicuous by her own achievements. A formidable and determined woman, she became a leading figure in the peace movement in New Zealand.

This extensively researched and unpretentious biography is not just the story of Millicent Baxter and the eminent Macmillan Brown and Baxter families, but a fascinating overview of New Zealand social history.

A well-written account of an extraordinary family. We couldn't separate Millicent independently from the influence of her parents, her immersive relationship with her husband and her parenting of her boys - J.K. Baxter particularly. No family is perfect as no mother is ideal, and she did her best. Archie was probably given new life having met Millicent and her influence on him post-WW1 was healing and profound. He had met his soul mate. She played a huge role in advancing pacifism as an option. As such, an important woman.

Generated much discussion - particularly around pacificism and treatment of conscientious objectors. Most didn't feel that Mildred was dominant in a book purporting to be about her.

Very thorough and academic book. We were fascinated by the people described in the book.

This was not an 'easy' read. Small print also. The book, as well as being a very thorough portrait of Millicent Baxter, gives us, without the author 'judging' anyone herself, the task of examining our own beliefs and prejudices, which is a pretty important and useful thing for a book to do, and which few manage to achieve.

Well received. Fascinating history that was little known. Very good discussion.

An excellent book about a fascinating woman. A pity it wasn't proof read before publication. Too many errors!

Well researched and written biography of the daughter of academics, wife of a pacifist and mother of a leading poet.

As a group we all felt the book was clearly and cleverly written, with considerable insight into a significant family. We would have enjoyed more insight into Millicent's feelings and emotions - but she was not forthcoming. An hour after the end of the book discussion, I can still hear them chatting about it - a great success!

One of the few books, in two years, that every single person in our group thoroughly enjoyed. Well researched. We liked and respected Millicent, admired Archie hugely, appreciated their love for each other and their extraordinarily principled lives.

A fascinating account, especially for the South Islanders among us, as the locales are well described and documented. Millicent's story helped us understand some of the writing by J.K. Baxter too. Very well received by all.

The book was well reviewed by everyone. A really accessible read about a remarkable woman of her time. A time in our history that should never be forgotten. Behind every great person are usually some remarkable people.

We absolutely LOVED this book. Our book group meeting was a walking tour of Millicent's early life in Christchurch. A wonderful wonderful read. Thank you.
