Title: My Life on the Road
Authors: Steinem, Gloria
Genre: Non Fiction
Pages: 276
Year: 2015
Language: English
Description: The foundations for Gloria Steinem's adult life, spent on the move, were laid in her itinerant childhood. Growing up to become one of the key figures of American feminism, her dedication to the movement for equality for many decades, had her crisscrossing the USA and further afield, connecting with communities and campaigns, conversing, empowering, walking the talk and bringing about change.

Both the engaging memoir of a writer, journalist, activist and inspiring leader, and a primer of late 20th century American political history, this is an intelligent and thoughtful reflection, delivered with humour and humility.

It was interesting to read this book, but a lot of people in our group found it hard to read so much information!

A great read. Absolutely brilliant memoir in every sense. Gloria wisely waited until she was 80 to write with such grace, wisdom and humour. The first chapter on her relationship with her father is sensational. Conversations with taxi drivers (Chp 3) also fascinating. Her insights into the lives of many famous people are priceless. She writes with wit, humility and much insight. Such a positive, high-achieving contribution to the feminist movement, and highly successful involvement in such a variety of causes.

We enjoyed this book and it promoted general discussion about women and their place in society in the 1970s and now. Gloria Steinem is a fascinating person who has lived an intriguing life.

The book resonated with most of us in terms of the sense of community Gloria Steinem helped create (and was part of over such a long period of time) with so many diverse and interesting people.

Really enjoyed by all. Well-written with an easy style. Steinem's life is worth reading about, as is her knowledge of many issues that she has fought for and against.

Some found it rambling and repetitive, although we all admired her life's work. Some sketches of inspirational people as well as unknown facts add to fascination. Lively discussion was a result.

An interesting account of the issues experienced, particularly during the 70s when the feminist movement took hold. However, it is a book for an American audience. Good notes.

Great book - much appreciated by our 100% female book club. Variously described as a must read, important enough to buy. A person we should all know about.

An interesting review of the US women's movement, by an important contributor to suffrage. Excellent notes.

Our group loved this! There was much food for thought - sadly things seem to have gone backwards in the USA; much of Gloria's work and what she stood for is being eroded. We learned a lot. Thank you.

Members enjoyed this amazing woman's stories. Some of us found the US campaign politics rather long winded. We were full of admiration for her approach and achievements in equality issues.

We were impressed by this woman's life and work, and her travel ethic; and discussed the causes and issues which she espoused. Very good notes too.

Truly fascinating - what a love of people, stories and causes - inspiring, but not a really gripping read.

We enjoyed reading this book full of interesting anecdotes about many historical figures. Gloria Steinem was a true daughter of her father following his nomadic ways. Where he followed unlikely business ventures, she followed causes that asked for her support.

Gloria Steinem's book provided scintillating discussion about political/feminist ideas. The book was full of amazing ideas, but the way it was written was dry and hard to engage with.

Mixed feedback on this book. We were impressed by Steinem's achievements and contribution to activism. However we felt that we didn't learn much about her as a person, or her motivation for her life in activism.

Those of us that read the book loved it. It was an interesting history and insight into the world of politics and change in the US from 1960 to present day. You don't feel like you know Gloria but you learn what and who is important to her.
