Title: Power, The
Authors: Alderman, Naomi
Genre: Fiction
Pages: 339
Year: 2017
Language: English
Description: When teenage girls discover that their bodies are capable of producing a deadly electrical charge, one minute it is the status quo, the next minute, revolution. Recorded as a history of the first ten years that follow the changing order, the chilling events are chronicled through the experiences of Roxy, daughter of a London gangster; Allie, an abused foster child; Margot an ambitious American politician; and Tunde, a Nigerian photojournalist documenting the events for posterity.

Fast-paced and provocative, this cleverly subversive story of changing gender dynamics speculates on the nature of power and just what might happen if women were in charge.

A thought provoking read - what happens when people get power? Some found it a hard read to get into, but once we understood the story it was gripping. Great read.

This one sparked lots of discussion! It made us all think deeply about our place in the world ( all females) and the role reversals in the book!

Generated discussion about whether this was about gender or more about power. (Our female group thought it was a shame women abused power when given it). Some scenes very gruesome but it generally challenged our thinking and conditioning.

Only enjoyed by 1 reader, but it did prompt a great deal of discussion. Very densely written, characterisation good ( maybe apart from main character Ellie), didn't like how women used power for ill, execution of premise could have been better, hard to tell this story without fantasy, religion angle depicted even more power wielded. Great discussion over the difference of male and female leaders.

All of us found this very well-written. Not all of us finished it. All of us have experienced being treated differently because of being female, and are aware of the treatment of some others. Some found the story did not 'grab' them, but those who finished it thought it was worth it.

The majority of readers were intrigued by this book. Globally and historically, dominance by males brought the general consensus that this had to change. The innovative way of dealing with power came out in this book. Overall the book was well received, powerful on many levels.

A mixed reaction to this one, from those who thought it an excellent book, deserving of the awards it has won and glowing reviews it has received, to those who didn't like it at all. Some thought it an interesting read but wouldn't go as far as to say they enjoyed it, some were put off by the science fiction side of it, others read it to the end to find out what happened, but still didn't really like it. I gave it a three, but that doesn't really reflect the group's mixed reaction as some would have given it a five.

A few struggled with this, particularly the sci-fi aspect, but it aroused vigorous discussion. We were all glad we had read it.
