We were all disappointed with this book. It was a stodgy read and some gave up. It did not help us understand young men today - seemed out of date as almost nothing about social media. |

We found this book very dense and textbook like. Repetitive in places, but also interesting and thought provoking. The use of empirical evidence to debunk the casual use of 'reasons' was cleverly done. Author has a good command of language and writing skills. Some of our group chose not to finish reading due to the somewhat heavy style - but nonetheless we agreed it is a worthy topic. |

Most found the book too 'dry' but informative. We admired Jamil's energy and drive to pull young disadvantaged kids out of the clutches of gangs and face a better future. Coming from his own gang related experiences makes this story more plausible and convincing. We discussed the power (positive and negative) that young people have over each other, how some kids are drawn into a darker side of life looking for a place to belong. |

What an incredible story of how Jamil moves from a disadvantaged at-risk child to such an amazing person. His life's work trying to understand and counteract the pull of radicalization. Some members couldn't read it. |

We all found this very interesting, and all got a lot of new insights from it. We didn't find it an "easy" read, but were glad we persevered. It initiated a very lively discussion and we would highly recommend it to other book groups. |

We found the book very overwhelming, alarming and powerfully moving, with Jamil Jivani's descriptive analysis on his input into problems with integration, and of course so many more complicated issues. Some relevance to the issues we have here in NZ, although certainly not as complex as the radical ethnic groups they are experiencing in other parts of the world... |
