Title: Testaments, The
Authors: Atwood, Margaret
Genre: Fiction
Pages: 448
Year: 2020
Language: English
Description: For the purposes of the 13th Symposium of Gilead Studies, what better way to lay out the inner workings of the dystopian society than the testimony of three women who have risked their lives to reveal its truths: Agnes Jemima who was raised to embrace all facets of the regime, the infamous Aunt Lydia, and last but not least, Daisy, who was smuggled across the border as a child.

In this return to the Republic of Gilead, fifteen years have passed since the events of The handmaid's tale and Offred's escape to an uncertain future, but the misogyny, the duplicity and oppression have continued.

Gripping and fast paced, this suspenseful story with its intriguing characters and weighty moral quandaries, offers a welcome glimmer of hope for the future of the women of Gilead.

The group, all men, mostly liked this book although several said it was good but they didn't enjoy it. Perhaps we marked it slightly higher than it should have been for fear of being called anti-feminist.

Half of us would rate this book highly, it's well-written and confronting given the politics in various countries in the world. Half did not read it - they mainly found it depressing and therefore didn't finish it. Nevertheless we had a lively and interesting discussion.

Some people thought the book was superbly written and really understood it. Others found it too detailed and too long.

Brilliant follow on from 'The Handmaid's Tale'. Some of us were enthralled, but all of us read it! Slightly annoyed by the 'convenience' of some of the story, but still a great read.

This book took many by surprise. Took a bit to get into but wow! Plenty of interesting concepts and a great plot led to thought provoking conversations.

Atwood is a wonderful writer, and the whole group enjoyed the language, the structure, the plot and the character development. The book works well as a sequel to 'The Handmaid's Tale', rounding the story off, and allowing those who had not read the earlier one to get the whole picture. Some felt it was rounded off too smoothly. Not an enjoyable topic though, especially in the current climate in the U.S.

This book answered many questions from 'The Handmaid's Tale'. We all enjoyed it. Could see some parallels with what seems to be happening in the world today.

As we had this book over lockdown, we didn't have a discussion meeting. I personally really liked it, as it was a good wrap up from The Handmaid's Tale.

Most in the group agreed it would have been an easier read if they'd read 'The Handmaid's Tale'. Some were upset with the content - all agreed it was well-written.

'The Testaments' is a great read, especially if you have previously read 'The Handmaid's Tale'.

Everyone really enjoyed this book. Cleverly written and challenging. Disturbing in content but lightened with humour as well.

We found this book perceptive and frightening and gripping. It is a great sequel to 'The Handmaid's Tale', with a message of hope, as well as a warning that situations can change very quickly.
