Title: Faking It
Authors: Mewburn, Kyle
Genre: Non Fiction: New Zealand
Pages: 266
Year: 2021
Language: English
Description: At the age of fifty-five, Kyle Mewburn embraced a transition that had been pending her whole life - from male to female. Growing up in 1960s' Queensland as a boy, Kyle always knew that to survive this role and its expectations, she would have to 'fake it'. She did so convincingly for decades - there was university, travel, marriage, establishing a home and a life in Central Otago, and becoming an award-winning writer of children's books.

Brave, honest and engaging, this thought-provoking memoir offers direct insight into the experience of growing up in the wrong body and the challenges of gender in a world unsympathetic to difference. [Larger font]

Mixed reviews on this one. The author's transition experiences were informative, but at times a bit slow for some.

Well-written on a topic that some of our members found difficult, but felt enlightened by on finishing.

Gutsy telling of transition. Most members felt more knowledgeable about the drivers and process.

Our group thought the book achieved its goal of educating the reader on transgender roles, the complexity of life as a trans woman, and the positive outlook on life and living by the author. We thought it a positive story of a marriage that survived and offered hope to others. Well-written and engaging.

Wow - a topical content but very individual portrayal that shoes how gender identity has always been a strong concept. We enjoyed delving into a very personal portrayal of how the author identified his longings and put his personal needs into medical procedures to change his body into female. This made sense to most in the group, although we wondered about his wife's reactions which were portrayed as supportive but not delved into.

This book created a lot of stimulating conversation within our group. Everyone enjoyed the book. The quality of the author's writing was superb. "Words were always the author's forte" as she was growing up - having written many award winning children's books, this is her first adult book. Her descriptive writing drew the reader into her world. A great read. The readers truly knew what it must have felt like, being born in the wrong body. Would highly recommend this book.

A book with this subject matter obviously engenders lively conversation. Filled with empathy and sympathy and respect. Not everyone was enamoured with her writing style but everyone appreciated her courage in writing this book.

A mixed response to this book, to be expected with our older age group! Parts were really enjoyed and other parts seemed to drag. Some members felt the writing was immature. Apart from this we all felt we learnt a lot and this resulted in a better understanding of people who are brave enough to transition.

This book prompted one of the best conversations of the year. Lots of personal anecdotes about trans people in our lives.

We had an excellent discussion. Amazing how many in our group knew, or knew of, trans people. One of our members lived in the same street as Kyle at Millers Flat, so that was interesting. We all thought it was too long and too much "poor me". We read his picture book 'Kiss Kiss Yuck Yuck' - much enjoyed by all.
