Important book that was very readable. Good to have as a 'dip into' on the bookshelf.

A very interesting read. We all enjoyed it despite its title.

Opinion was varied on this one - some didn't read it, some read parts, and others read it all and thought it was excellent. Ideas on soil care and scientific justification were compelling.

All the group felt they'd learned a lot and it led to an interesting discussion on many of the topics the author raised. It was very well-written so readers (including those without a scientific background) could understand the many issues raised. It had a good index but others noticed there were footnotes through the text but no list of of references. Unfortunately we all missed the part where it says that these are available online at Murdoch Books. This was a first for us but expect it will become more common in the future.

We all found this book very accessibly written and we enjoyed a dynamic discussion about soil, from composition to composting. The issue of soil poverty was sobering and challenging.

Most of our group were unable to finish the book - finding it too technical and dry . An important topic - but lacked good editing.

We all enjoyed the book and felt we learned a lot. The science in the book was presented in an interesting and accessible way and we are all trying to make changes to maximise the health of our soil. We are fascinated by the ideas of the complexity of the soil biome and that diversity is what we need to strive for.

Superlatives came thick and fast for this book. So much good sense and information. Some struggled with the technical aspects but all enjoyed it. The result was an in-depth discussion and a great deal of learning. The notes and questions were particularly good.

Most of the group read this and really appreciated the kind of knowledge they gained. We had a good discussion about the N.Z. environment.

We found this to be a real eyeopener to the complex and fascinating life found in our soil. Although the scientific detail was quite dense, the writing was engaging and thought provoking. It certainly gives us positive ideas for helping to "save the planet". A recommended read.

This was of great interest to nearly all members - we are changing our habits re gardening, and more than one of us is buying their own copy of the book.

A very valuable book! Was very informative, very readable, credible, and covered a wide range of scientific research. Well written - one didn't need to be a scientist to follow what he was talking about, but would have appeal to scientists as well because it was well backed up with citations...

A great book, so interesting and informative - everyone should read it!! This is the first time our group has given a rating of 5 out of 5!! Amazing depth of scientific research and solutions offered. Needs to be taught in schools and in the media.

We found this book sobering, extending, very informative, and found it difficult to say what was the most surprising fact we learned; there were so many! Our enriched understanding of soil and the way it should be treated left us inspired, and hopeful for the earth's future. Very good questions and notes by Darryl.

Not an easy read. Needed a good editor. One member didn't attempt it, while another only read some. Three thought it good to have read. Learned a lot about soil.

A fascinating topic. The writing style polarised readers more than the topic as it was sometimes repetitive, sometimes too general, or too detailed. But he did make the science very readable. It succeeded in in exciting us all on the relevance in our daily lives though.

Most people "dipped in and out" of this book. Some didn't read it at all. We had a very interesting discussion.
