Title: Thursday Murder Club, The
Authors: Osman, Richard
Genre: Fiction
Pages: 377
Year: 2021
Language: English
Description: So much for lazy days dozing in the sun! The Jigsaw Room at Coppers Chase is being put to good use by the Thursday Murder Club: Elizabeth (something to do with espionage), Joyce (a former nurse), Ibrahim (a psychiatrist), and Ron (a trade unionist through and through) are testing their mettle with cold cases, abruptly upgraded to an active case involving their very own retirement village. With the strategic (but unofficial) inclusion of the ambitious P. C. Donna De Freitas to the mix, they are ready to put their formidable nous and experience to excellent use.

Fast-paced, clever and so very British, this is a highly entertaining story with murder and mirth cheek by jowl.

Overall, this book was not well received. Two loved it, the rest found it somewhat fatuous with characters more like caricatures.

Well enjoyed once underway but slow to get into and understand the characters. Could understand its popularity and more discussion was had about the resulting television series and the actors portraying the characters. Some were very keen to read the following books.

There was a mixed reaction to this book, from "deplorable - the worst book I've read for ages", to "I found myself chuckling, and warmed to the characters enough to read other books in the series". There was, however, almost unanimous agreement that the plot was convoluted and there was too much detail provided about what turned out to be minor characters. Some of us felt that there was a 'Blytonesque' quality to the tale telling, presumably done for comic effect, but which made it difficult to take other elements of the book seriously. We all had trouble keeping the story straight.

The group found this book light-hearted and enjoyable, but at times it was confusing with so many characters and plots. It provoked good discussion.

We had a completely divided response to this book. Some loved it and others didn’t enjoy it at all. We discussed the details of the murders to sort out what we all understood. The context was clever and the idea of meaningful “work” for the residents in a rest home interesting but the portrayal of the police, a parody- funny but not possible in real life.

An easy, light read with some humour. A who-done-it with a higher than usual attrition rate even for a retirement home.

What an excellent read for the middle of a bleak, grey winter! Everyone enjoyed 'The Thursday Murder Club' immensely and a couple have read subsequent publications. The characterisations were excellent as well as the twists and turns of the plot. Appreciated were the times we laughed out loud, often followed by being close to tears. All wanted the opportunity to meet the characters in person!

The group had a varied reaction to the many strands of the story. We would have liked more depth as we had unanswered questions. Overall an easy read.

A lovely light quirky read, but as most of our members are over 70, our discussion extended to the pros and cons of Rest Home/ Retirement Village living.

A good light read. Very likeable characters. Enough red herrings to keep you guessing. A book we all enjoyed.

Most of our ladies really enjoyed this book. Some got a bit lost at the end! Was a fun read and made some of us feel we could enjoy living in a retirement village with a Murder Club!

Nearly all our group loved this book for its humour, clever portrayal of characters, and twists and turns in the plot. A couple found it trite with stereotypical characters.

Enjoyed by everyone although some thought there were too many subplots/divisions. Led to discussion of 'ageing" and the freedom it gives you to be and do. And of course, lots of discussion of Retirement Villages!!

This book took a number of us some time to get a sense of what it was all about. As we got deeper into the book it became more enjoyable.

Mixed reviews from the group on this one. All agreed they could relate to the characters and thought the author was clever with his observations of them. All thought it was an easy, fun read. However, while some thoroughly enjoyed the book and were excited to read the sequels, others thought it was a little slow and tedious and perhaps a little ‘light’, and wouldn’t recommend it to others. Overall, the score was a 3.0 / 5.

A lively humorous discussion on 'The Thursday Murder Club'. Great, quirky characters - a complex mix but maybe a few too many red herrings. A very clever author - we enjoyed it and are keen to read the other titles in the series.
