Description:

In 1949, life changed forever for the Uyghur people of Turkistan; their land handed over by Stalin to the Chinese Communist Party, followed by an ongoing campaign of forced assimilation. Author Nury Turkel is a champion for his people, a human rights lawyer and activist, and a commissioner for the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom.
In this important and eminently readable book, Turkel's lived experience and extensive research reveal the many horrors of genocide and crimes against humanity inflicted on the Uyghur people.
Written with respect and sensitivity, this is a riveting and shocking account of the Uyghur crisis.

Those of us who finished the book felt that it was a gripping and terrible indictment of China's treatment of a group, and its total disregard for human rights. Those who did not finish it found it too disturbing, although they were aware of the Uyghurs' situation. The last chapter shows what could and should be done, and should also be a warning to other countries going down the road to dangerous levels of surveillance. Difficult to rate this book but maybe 4-4.5 for the message. |

Sadly, a very informative book as we knew so little about the horrors being endured by so many in China. Although many of us felt the book was too repetitive and therefore too long, it did generate stimulating discussion and further independent reading. Once again, it makes us all most appreciative of where we live and the society that we can enjoy. |

An easy book to read with horrific information. Everyone was pleased to have read about the Uygurs, but were appalled at this genocide that seems to have disappeared from public notice in the past few years. It engendered a feeling of helplessness and led to a discussion on what individuals can do. Well worth reading. |

A truly eye-opening book - we all learnt a lot. Some found it a bit repetitive and not well-written, but it certainly produced good discussion. |

This is an informative important book. It's horrific to learn about what is happening to the Uyghur people by the CCP in recent years and today. It's a modern-day genocide! |

Very well-written. Horrific. Eye opening. The history and culture was so impressive. Maybe it was overly long - too much to take in. |

No Escape is not an easy read but we all thought that the exposure of Uyghur persecution in China is a story that needs to be told. While most of us were vaguely aware of the banning of Islam and the "re-education" of the Uyghurs in the Xinjiang province of China, the extent of the atrocities shocked us deeply and and raised the question of how to boycott goods we believe are produced by slave labour. We felt that this very well-written book should be read by everyone. |

Disturbing, overwhelmingly sad but important. We are hopeful that the Uyghurs will endure, and admire the author and his sacrifices enormously. |

Most of our group read the book or part of it. We agreed that it was important to learn about the details of the plight of the Uyghur people. The book was well-written and easy to read - apart from the fact that it was difficult and disturbing. |

A bit "dry" due to the complexity of names and places, also changing periods and stories. But a fascinating and scary insight to a culture within a country. |

This is a story everyone should know about and we had a good discussion. It was interesting, disturbing and revealing about the genocide the Uyghurs are suffering. It was very interesting how one Uyghur who travelled to America was able to communicate this shocking story. |
