Description:

Whether she likes it or not, Lucy Easthope, an international authority on recovering from disaster, has no choice about keeping up with the news.
The 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, the Christchurch earthquake, the Grenfell fire, even the Covid-19 pandemic to name but a few, come under her domain as the go-to person for helping communities and governments recover from disaster and prepare for the next time it happens.
Practical, honest and underpinned with compassion, this is the at-times funny, no-nonsense memoir of a disaster management specialist who brings hope and expertise when catastrophe strikes.

An incredible recount of such an incredible life. How a young girl could decide to pursue this career and how she came to be involved in so many tragic events in our modern world was quite mind-blowing. The events were so easy to remember and yet we had no idea of all the planning and rescuing that has been involved each time. The personal aspect created good discussion as her husband and family would often have to be left in ignorance as to what she was doing and why she needed to be elsewhere. Her qualifications are certainly impressive. Rather too graphic for some to finish. |

A fascinating read, which promoted lots of reminiscing and discussion. We will never watch news reports of 'disasters' in the same 'detached' way again. |

An interesting and confronting book. We all learnt something. Lucy Easthope is a special kind of person to do that work. |

Half of the group didn't finish the book as found it overwhelming. The other half found it interesting and could relate to most of the disasters in the book. None realised how much went on after the aftermath of each disaster. |

BDS did well in the choice of this book. It was a fascinating, and at times, harrowing read on a subject we all knew very little about, and need to know about. |

Liked the historical perspective, bringing N.Z. history to life. Enjoyed relating to ourselves and our family history. Well-researched with believable characters. Some did not really like it however. |

The group rated this very highly. We found it surprisingly interesting and thought-provoking. Excellent writing, and the interweaving of her private life and her work was a strength. She has a rare gift, is passionate about her job, and is willing to go beyond. |

An interesting read - although some in our group struggled to finish it. |

A polarising read! An interesting behind the scenes insight into disasters. Some in our group didn't complete and found it too full-on, others loved it. |

We thought this a very informative book, and we probably all think about disasters in a different way now. We were full of admiration for her energy and dedication. We did have a certain amount of discussion on our own disaster preparedness which is probably a good thing. |

Two members found the subject matter too gory. Though the writing style was a little disjointed, there was good discussion about disasters and the book is a worthwhile read. Thought provoking. Maybe N.Z. could learn from this how to plan for a disaster! |

A book of immensity. While people struggled with this, we felt it was a well-written and important account of things not fully revealed. The personal experience of the writer's life was well balanced in the face of the world's traumatic events. |

Pragmatic tone meant we could finish the book - if it had been too depressing it would be hard to read. We enjoyed it. |
