Out of the blue, the age-old question, 'how long is a piece of string?', suddenly matters to every adult on the planet. Arriving on every doorstep of anyone 22 or older is a small box containing a length of string and engraved with the words, 'The measure of your life lies within'. These mysterious revelations grip the world affecting every facet of life from the mundane to those wielding power. What does it mean to know how your days are numbered, or those of the people you love?
Thought-provoking and moving, this intriguing story follows seemingly unconnected characters as they grapple with their mortality and how to live their lives, regardless of their length.

A great discussion. Only two people out of our seven members would open the box if presented with one. It became a very personal read with everyone choosing a favourite character, one they could identify with. |

We had a very robust discussion about the themes in this book, but the majority of our group did not enjoy this book. |

This book drew a big variety of opinions from 1.5 to 4.00. Some readers thought interesting and thought provoking, and enjoyed the sci-fi nature, while others thought it nonsensical, a bit stupid, and at times unsettling and oppressive... |

'The Measure' is a great story. Thought-provoking. What would you do if you had the chance to find out how long your life was? A good look at human behaviour. We certainly had a long discussion with this one. |

Many of us didn't finish this book. One or two couldn't get past the first 100 pages. The premise of the novel was too far-fetched. Some discussion on the fear in knowing one's life expectancy. |

What an interesting book!! We had a great discussion covering everything from whether we would open our box to whether we would go walk about if we got a short string. An eye-opening book which raised a lot of questions. |

This book created a great discussion with our group, especially regarding the inevitable question, "Would you look?" |

Gave us food for thought, but we didn't find the writing style that interesting. |

Universally liked the premise of the book - to grapple with the knowledge that you could choose to know the length of your life, and what impact it would make on your life decisions or the decisions that others make take about you. A few of us were disappointed in the writing style (pedestrian) and felt there was too much trying to be inclusive with the mix of characters covering all combinations of relationships. Still, we had a robust discussion and mostly reflected on trying to rise above the daily tedium, and to value each day. |

Good discussion around whether it would, or would not be useful to know your time of death. |

Certainly thought provoking. Credible, mostly likeable characters displaying understandable response to their 'string'. Each of us could identify as at least one character. Great discussion covering personal response, political response, prejudice, the human response etc.etc. Good discussion questions. |

Most of us really enjoyed the book, though one thought it silly and didn't finish it. Regardless, much discussion was generated particularly around whether we would open the box and why. |

This light 'sci-fi' book generated interesting discussion around what we would do in that situation ( to look or not) and what decisions would flow on from that. Interesting characters and an easy read. |

We all loved this book and got so much out of it. We think it's worth re-reading and doing so at different stages of life to get different things from it. Many meaningful quotes were shared. It generated lots of discussion and thought provoking comments around life and death. |

Excellent discussion from this book. Great concept as a way of looking at life, and what is or isn't important. |
