Description:

Once upon a time there was Lexington, the fastest horse in the world, a horse worthy of a portrait but more than 150 years later the painting is found discarded on a Washington D.C. footpath.
Lexington's story is a story of the South, of Jarret his groom, of the Civil War, the burgeoning horse racing industry, and in the 21st century, of Theo an art historian, Jess, a Smithsonian scientist, and a bitter legacy of slavery and racism. Extensively researched, beautifully written.

Most enjoyed this book. Brookes writes very well and everyone appreciated the depth of historical research into slavery, racing, and the Civil War. Some found the racism depicted as an integral part of the context was disturbing, partly because so realistic. We generally thought the chapters set in the present day were not as successful as the earlier ones. |

We all loved the book - we enjoyed the racing elements, and the social conditions were incredibly revealing. The depiction of slavery was horrific, the concept of being sold and the way the slaves could be manipulated was so shocking. |

Very positive response by all. Very well-written, and the transition between historical and present is well crafted. Characters and relationships, particularly of Jarrett, are treated with dignity, and although enslaved, his relationship with the horse is always at the forefront. The history of the time, although complex, was detailed and didn’t overwhelm the story. The more current characters were slightly less well formed, but the links cleverly made. A book of wide appeal, would recommend. |

Fantastic book - 5/5. Enjoyed and recommended by all. Only complaint - the size of the font! Superbly drawn characters all woven together in different timelines. Packed with history and modern issues. |

We loved reading the history and learning about the horse and all the people its life touched. A well woven story crossing time. |

Enjoyed the story. Took a bit to warm to but then was a great read. Really enjoyed the 1850s/'60s era story the most, but it was great to add the modern story to link some of the past storylines. |

Fabulous story, love Geraldine Brooks. Some were not sure if the sections with Martha Jackson were a diversion, but guess it was following the line of the portraits. One member loved and was moved by the story so much that she bought a print of 'Lexington'! |
