Description: During the 2013-14 Euromaidan protests in Kyiv, thousands of Ukrainians protested against their country's move to alignment with Russia rather than the European Union. Fragmented, date wise, so not easy to follow chronologically. However the book gave an insight to Ukraine's history of suffering.

This was mainly appreciated for the insights into events and positions in Ukraine in 2014. We had a very mixed response to the novel's structure.

Unusual book. Good in places, but quite hard to keep track of characters. Very topical.

Extremely well researched and well-written. Highlights the 2014 invasion that was barely mentioned by the world at the time, and is so pertinent now. Most wouldn't have chosen this at the library but we were glad to have read it, and it reinforced the good decision to join a book group! A wide ranging discussion.

The subject matter was very topical but we all found the book very confusing with jumping from one set of characters to another. Apart from the Russian character, many felt the other characters too difficult to distinguish between. It was a challenging structure.

A difficult read due to alternating characters but clearly showed the futility and hopelessness of the situation in Ukraine. Very sad but some beautiful prose.

Plenty of interest in the novel and a lot of discussion. Relevant read about Ukraine's history and connection with Russia. The characters were well developed and the plot was complex and moved quickly. A popular choice.

A very relevant, interesting if disturbing read. The complexities of Ukraine's past and present history laid bare. It was cleverly written, but became complicated at times as the characters chopped and changed and the time frames moved, not helped by several characters having the same name. It did lead to a very good discussion of Ukraine, Russia, war in general, with parallels drawn to genocide in Gaza and the plight of the Palestinians. A worthwhile read, and one that led many of us into further research.

Mixed reactions by our group with some finding it difficult to keep track of the storylines and the Russian names. One member read it together with the audiobook which removed this confusion and they rated it highly.
