Description:

It's 1942 and when Avis Montgomery's brother heads off to the war in Europe, she reluctantly takes up his role of head-librarian in their small town in Maine. Reading isn't really Avis's thing, but needs must and she starts a book club in an effort to keep the library open. Before long this disparate group of readers are involved with one another's lives, supporting each other as the country moves to its war footing, and U-boat battles loom offshore.
This is an engaging and satisfying read with its well-developed characters attesting to the power of friendship and literature to get you through the tough times.

Our group enjoyed this book though the beginning chapters gave us a few doubts. Many of us had assumed it was set in Britain, just from the title. |

We all enjoyed how the story was told through the notes and minutes of the 'meetings'. Generated interesting discussion. |

This book was enjoyed by the group but all agreed it was at first difficult to get into. However, once the characters were established and their stories started to develop, it became an engaging story. |

A gentle look at the lives of Eastern coastal Americans during WW11. The opening of the book club brings the characters together, each with their own story. The group thought the writing a little amateurish and the plot predictable but it led to a diverse discussion. |

No one hated this book, but neither did anyone love it. Most found the story and the characters a bit simplistic although all found the information on wartime conditions in Maine interesting as none of us knew about the German subs coming close to the coast or them having to adopt blackout conditions. Probably a book for someone who wants a very a light, undemanding read. |

This was our first book and our first meeting. We all enjoyed an easy read as the start of our bookie friendship. Most enjoyed it and were fascinated with the WW2 Maine experience. Some of us found the writing a tad amateur and the plot thin, but it made for a wonderfully diverse discussion. |

Easy read - predictable, but interesting to see the war from an American perspective. |

Most thought it a good 'holiday' read. Some were a bit scathing about the storyline, but others enjoyed it and found it easy reading. Several looked up more about the U boats off the coast of Maine. |

The book was slow to get into and not everyone persevered. Those of us that did, enjoyed the characters, the history and learning, and relative "easiness" of the storyline. Some would have preferred more drama to be in the book, but an enjoyable read nonetheless. |

Most of our members found the female characters introduced at the beginning of the book a little hard to get their heads around to start with, but it all came together as the scene was set for this wartime story. We liked the development of the characters and commented that none of us had ever been aware of how WW2 had affected the lives of everyday people in the USA. We loved the notes that were taken during each bookclub meeting -how the different members added their own sense of humour and perspective on their chosen titles! Everyone enjoyed the twists and turns of the plot... |
