Description:
|
Ever wondered what it would be like to be a medical student? Or considered if Māori are disadvantaged by New Zealand's healthcare system, or what it was like as a Māori junior doctor during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic? Well, look no further; Dr Emma Espiner documents her change of career into the world of medicine with passion and insight.
Engaging and profound, this is a sharp and provocative memoir from an seasoned podcaster, writer and political commentator, driven by her unique lived experience.

Not well liked by most of the group at the meeting although the second part of the book was better. Some important issues were raised but we felt parts of it were disjointed and some times repetitive. A good discussion arose from the questions and the issues raised in the book. |

We are a group of mostly health professionals, and we all related to this memoir. We loved the frank honesty and the unflinching telling of the difficult tales. |

She wrote about some very important issues we need to learn about. Very well-written. We'd like to know what she's doing now! She seemed angry, but we can understand given the historical and contemporary inequities. Generated a good discussion about MAPAS and schemes that give priority to a group to redress inequities. |

An authentic thought-provoking read but somewhat depressing re broken health system and the harsh life of a medical student and registrar. Genuine, authentic writing style. |

Varied reaction within the group - one group member who is herself a G.P. said she really enjoyed it. Others didn't like the essay style of writing and found it unsatisfying. |

Felt like reading a series of blog posts. Well-written and insightful but lean on deeper details. Definitely not going to Middlemore Hospital, ever! |

'There's a Cure For This' promoted the most animated discussion our group has ever had. One member read it twice and felt it had its finger on the pulse of N.Z. today. Others found it disjointed and challenging. All agreed a good writer. |

An interesting journey into the author's culture and heritage, in a N.Z. setting - especially considering the current state of the health system. |

Book created a lot of discussion - an easy read but most of us found it didn't flow well. Had to remind ourselves it was a memoir. We all felt we learnt a lot from this book and we were particularly impressed with Emma's mother's efforts to support her learning Te Reo. |
