Description:

When Vicki and Billy meet and fall in love, the world is their oyster. From 1980's Napier to the bright lights of Auckland and the lure of the mighty dollar, their relationship is a wild rollercoaster ride. There is flair and talent, living the high life, having a family, and then there is the spectre of mental illness. Can love really conquer all?
Reflecting the author's own experiences, this is the raw and gripping story of a tumultuous relationship laid bare and a skilfully rendered portrayal of New Zealand over time.

The message that love conquers all is insightful; exploring dysfunctional relationships alongside living with the realities of mental illness. Her vivid descriptions brought the scenes to life, especially for those of us who remember 1980s Hawkes Bay. We enjoyed the quirky character names, which added a touch of humour to such a heavy theme. Overall, we enjoyed this book, as it made us think about how we view mental health and relationships. |

Most members enjoyed the start of this book, and were intrigued by the world it described, but felt the story became les coherent and engaging as it went on. The uneasy overlap between fiction and memoir was also problematical for some of us. |

Initially some of our group found the style of this book difficult but after some persuasion continued to read, and grew into the genre and the style to the point of rating the story highly. |

The group did not like this book at all. The subject matter was too confronting as several members had family who are bipolar. They questioned why an author would write an autobiography and market it as a novel. The sarcastic pseudonyms given to real people in the story alienated the group even more from the author. Not many actually bothered to finish the story. |

The essence of this book falls into place when you read the notes, and find out it is her story. Raises discussion about mental health in N.Z. |
