Description: Meet the Kincaids ... a family to be reckoned with in Claiborne County, West Virginia. It is the prohibition era and the Kincaids are highly successful bootleggers, led by their patriarch, the Duke. But with his untimely demise, his daughter Sallie comes into her own, navigating feuding families, lawlessness and complex moral dilemmas, all while keeping the moonshine flowing.

With a nod to the history of the Tudor dynasty, this is an entertaining story with a feisty, no-nonsense protagonist claiming her place in the changing American South.

The first book that the whole group has read for a while. "A rollicking read".

Most enjoyed the book but wouldn't necessarily recommend it to friends. The bootlegger history was interesting and the fact that the main character was a woman. Lots of twists and turns in the plot.

An overly long family saga set in rural Virginia 20th Century in the age of Prohibition. Numerous characters and events occur in a short time-span, some seeming superfluous. Interesting times. We learnt about bootlegging, rum-runners and Moonshine. Women's roles were clearly defined so the main character was a welcome change, being smart and sassy. There are lots of disparities between rich and poor, urban and rural, men and women - all worthy of some discussion.

Most of us gave the book a six or seven and described it as a rollicking yarn, a soap opera, melodramatic, and discussion was deepened by the comparison with the narrative of Henry the Eighth.

Well developed characters. The Tudor link was not obvious to most despite the beginning quotes. Enjoyed the setting of the West Virginia bootleggers which gave a good picture of those times. We thought it would make a great movie. Most members liked and enjoyed the book. The numerous characters took some sorting with one member making a plan to follow who was who which we thought was a very good idea. Overall a good read.

This book was enjoyed by everyone in the group. An interesting story that maybe became a little surreal towards the end.

Most of our group found this an easy read and fairly simplistic. One of our group identified the connection with the history of the Tudors. A good read if you want a book to take on holiday. Plenty of action and a strong central character.

A bit too tidy in the end - not believable. Interesting time period piece.

Some loved the book - particularly having a strong female character. Others would have liked fewer themes and more development.

A rollicking read of a businesswoman ahead of the times. Great characters and an easy read.

We all enjoyed this book. Well-written. A refreshing change of writing style. A great storyline with some underlying sobering truths - thoughtful, while lighthearted.
