Description:

Once upon a time there was a beautiful village that held a million stories of love and loss and peace and war, and it was swallowed up by a fire that blazed up to the sky.
A family from two nations, England and Greece, live a simple life on a tiny Greek island: Irini, Tasso and their daughter, lovely, sweet Chara, whose name means joy. Their life goes up in flames in a single day when one man starts a fire out of greed and indifference.
But this family has survived, and slowly green shoots of hope and renewal will grow from the smouldering ruins of devastation... [Taken from book cover, Allen and Unwin Books]

A powerful story which provoked a lot of discussion. Well-written and well told. A journey to forgiveness and recovery from trauma. |

All read the book but had mixed views on whether they liked it. Repetitive wording/story telling annoyed some readers. |

Opinions differed as some did not like the style.Graphic descriptions of forest fire and its aftermath and effect on people's lives but we did not find the characters very convincing. |

We all enjoyed the book. It reminded us of the human and environmental costs of natural disasters. The implicit themes of blame/global warming gave depth to the moving story. |

Very mixed response. Poor writing spoils an otherwise very interesting scenario. |

Comments included : An inspiring story of survival after tragedy, and promoted much thought and discussion about climate change! Beautifully written and easy to read. A sad story but liked the format and felt hopeful for the family by the ending. Unsettling but a necessary story to be told. |

A well-written book that kept us engaged. A searing subject presented with a delicate touch. Liked that this serious issue was presented with a human touch, not didactic. |

Issues raised in the narrative but not resolved. Good discussion followed trying to understand the issues and comparing to our own experiences. |
