Authors: Henn, Carsten
Genre: Fiction
Pages: 384
Year: 2023
Language: English
Description: From his many years as a bookseller, 72-year-old Carl Kollhoff is a dab hand at matching books and readers, and after closing time he happily walks the town delivering his selections to shut-in customers. One evening he is ambushed by nine-year-old Schascha who is adamant she will be accompanying Carl on his rounds, whether he likes it or not. She is a force to be reckoned with, and it's not long before Schascha has inserted herself into Carl's routine and the lives of his band of readers, even offering her own book recommendations. Heart-warming and satisfying, this is a story rich with literary references, that confidently extols the transformative power of friendship and books.

This book was enjoyed by all in the group. They loved the idea of developing a community around the books by delivering them to people. The friendship and banter between Carl and Schascha gave the story some depth. People commented on the satisfying end to the novel.

Enjoyed by most. Great character descriptions. Definitely a work of fiction as some aspects fairly unbelievable, but a good read nonetheless.

We all enjoyed the book although felt it may have lost a bit in translation. A feel good story about how books can bring people together.

We all really enjoyed the book. Provoked lots of discussion. Ending a bit abrupt, we felt. Was almost a 'fairytale'.

A disappointing read - the book was neither realistic nor credible. It initially appeared as a light and whimsical read, it then addressed serious issues which were never examined in depth. Perhaps some content was lost in translation.

Our group all enjoyed this book. It was described by one member as a fairy tale for adults. Easy to read and very interesting characters, each with their unique circumstances.

We all enjoyed the book but felt it was quite hard to get into, and wasn't what we had really expected.

Our group's favourite read this year. Loved it. Tender, heart warming, funny and sad.

We were more or less all of the same opinion - light, engaging, amusing, fanciful and implausible. Perhaps it's an allegory for the good that books can do for people. We enjoyed it but some of us seemed to be a bit embarrassed about enjoying so simple a story with so many improbabilities.

We all felt the depiction of the characters was very clever - a bit like a fairytale in many parts. You could picture the scenes so well - a very clever depiction of the world of the child and the bookstore. A charming read, said many of us. It was amazing how you felt connected to Carl and the other book loving characters. A real story of intergenerational friendship and how books can transform lives.
