Title: Girl in His Shadow, The
Authors: Blake, Audrey
Genre: Fiction
Pages: 384
Year: 2021
Language: English
Description: Being raised in the London household of the eccentric Dr Horace Crofts has its advantages: orphan Nora Beady is trained in the practice of medicine in an era when it is illegal for women to do so. The arrival of a new resident doctor - Daniel Gibson - places Nora between a rock and a hard place: reveal her skill and knowledge and risk imprisonment, or allow her patients to suffer.

Accurately reflecting the medical world of the Victorian era, this is the fascinating and inspiring story of a young woman forced by convention into the shadows but determined to create her own medical legacy.

Everyone really enjoyed the book for its tensely plotted and beautifully written story with historical medical facts, and gender and ethnic bias. A page turner also in terms of the romantic aspect. Provoked much discussion about contemporary issues. Excellent BDS notes - very helpful.

Great story. Shows how far professions have changed for women, but we still have a way to go. Good writing.

Interesting approach to Victorian England. The power of the male academics in the medical world. Nora makes the most of her situation, learning how to draw; to do surgery; and to become accomplished at assisting the doctor. Her abilities challenged Dr Daniel. An interesting read of the time. Now waiting for the sequel!

A great story however some of our members felt it was quite predictable. The medical information and storyline were amazing - such a clever woman...
