Title: Gangster's Paradise
Authors: Savage, Jared
Genre: Non Fiction: New Zealand
Pages: 308
Year: 2023
Language: English
Description: New Zealand is often regarded as 'God's-own country', but in this hard-hitting expose, journalist Jared Savage details just how it has become a paradise for gangs. Drugs, guns and money, and with the influx of '501' deportees from Australia into the territory of local gangs, the outcome is inevitable...

Confronting and thought-provoking, this is an eye-opening examination of the complex web of organised crime in New Zealand and the challenges it presents to law enforcement.

Thought provoking discussion. Harder to read, as read more like a newspaper.

The book created a lot of discussion! Most of us had no idea how bad the problem was i.e. drugs/ return of the '501s' from Australia. We feel it is a book that New Zealanders should read!

An interesting read about the criminal underworld in N.Z. It was fascinating to read about the undercover work the police undertake to catch the criminals, and the extent that criminals will go to when importing and exporting drugs.

As a group of older women we found the book shocking, but were very glad to have read it. Especially struck by the impact on the children. Also impressed by the bravery and tenacity of the police.

Generated huge discussion, especially as our area featured! Some members bought this book for themselves.

An eye-opening and sobering read, challenging us to acknowledge that NZ is not immune to the global scourge of organised crime. It generated a lot of discussion about aligned issues of gun laws, the impact of drug abuse in the wider community, the role of enablers of crime (e.g. the luxury goods market!) and admiration of the role the police play in working with careful, diligent persistence in tracking down the criminals involved. The writing was good, typical of strong investigative journalism - a little repetitive but very informative.

A sobering and 'arresting' story, well researched and well-written. Some partners picked up and read this book also. We all despaired at the state of gun laws at this time. Generated good discussion.

Great book for discussion, but not read by all our female members. A challenging subject.

Interesting, at times horrifying, read. Perhaps not the usual genre for our group, so mixed reactions.

A horrifying and depressing insight into organised crime and the huge problem of gangs, drugs and guns we have in N.Z. The police are forever keeping up with the sophisticated ploys of our underworld and creating ironclad cases once the gangsters get to court. A good discussion.

A good discussion was had among members. It was very eye opening about the increase in gangs and gang culture since Australia started sending over N.Z. born criminals who had had 12 months or more jail time. This has resulted in the increase of gun related crime, drug importation, violence etc. Well-written book.
