Description:
|
From archaeologist to military leader, T.E. Lawrence is remembered for his exploits in the Middle East during WWI, with his successful guerilla tactics still emulated today. And who better to retell the epic story of 'Lawrence of Arabia' than a writer known as one of the world's greatest living explorers: Ranulph Fiennes.
Exploring the fascinating parallels between the experiences of the author and his subject, this is an eminently readable story of two memorable characters and a region of the world still reeling from the decisions made a century ago.

Our book group found this to be an interesting and informative read, but most of us had to work at reading it. We found some confusion when reading the book with Ranulph’s experiences in Oman intermingled with Lawrence’s exploits. However, we felt Ranulph had done careful and considered research in writing the book. The book needed more maps and the index didn't seem to be comprehensive. The book provoked a lot of discussion, particularly in view of what is happening in that region today. |

Great read - layers of complexity to T.E. Lawrence - from the English schooling system, distant father figures, outstanding personal bravery, superb diplomacy, crushing humiliations and PTSD. |

Universal appreciation for an inspirational book about an energetic and inspirational leader. We would have liked some more maps to fully appreciate the impact of the Arab War. |

The group found it too long and detailed. No good maps. They did not like the interruption to Lawrence's story, with that of Ranulph Fiennes' story of time fighting in Oman. |

The book was enjoyed. We felt he was an incredible person, and we admired his leadership but felt he was looking for his place in life. Sad loss at a young age. |

Good discussion - informative and thought provoking, due to its relevancy to the current conflict between Israel and the Arab States. Group were split in two with scores either 1.5 or 4. |

Most really enjoyed, learnt, and enthused. Some found the history lesson not interesting - more maps needed. |
