Having decided that medical school is not for her, Emma Starling is back home in Everton, New Hampshire, and not a moment too soon. Her father Clive is hallucinating small animals thanks to a rare brain disease, her brother Auggie is in and out of rehab for opioid addiction, her mother is at the end of her tether, and to top it all off, her best friend Crystal is missing. More than enough to be getting on with... and that's before the inhabitants of the local cemetery have their say! Quirky and original, this is a captivating story of the challenges facing small-town USA, threaded through with compassion and humour, and featuring the legacy of real-life naturalist Ernest Harold Baynes.

We enjoyed the whimsy and the droll sense of humour. It was interesting to learn that the story evolved from several other stories - this perhaps accounted for the fact that there was a lot going on - too much we thought. One of our more voracious readers said she almost abandoned the book...but then things got better near the end when all the loose ends got tied up (somewhat improbably). It was an easy read and we had a good discussion. We liked Clive! |

Our group absolutely loved this quirky novel. Humorous but covered serious issues. Unique and engaging narrative perspectives. So enjoyable! |

Quirky, lighthearted and enjoyable. We loved it for being heartfelt and whimsical. For some of us the story was too busy, others fell in love with the colourful characters of his small American town. |
