A man of the cloth, Irish priest Hugh O'Flaherty is also a man of action – and action is what is required in 1943 occupied-Rome with many Jews and Allied POWs needing to evade the Nazis. Bringing together a resistance network under the guise of a choir, from his base in the Vatican, the Monsignor and his singers risk life and limb to thwart SS Officer Paul Hauptmann and his unrelenting surveillance. Compelling, exhilarating and narrated with cinematic detail, this powerful literary thriller is based on a true story.
Comments from BDS Reviewers:"I can't see that I will read a better book any time soon. I will now seek out other books by this author."
"This is a different take on WWII activities."
"I would rate it as one of my best ever reads of stories of this time."
"Very well written and compelling as the writer takes us through the build up to the operation, following Hugh's every step through the back streets, cloisters, hidden passages and crypts of Rome."
"Very descriptive both of the place and the people."

Most of the group enjoyed this book. The different characters talking in their own voices made it very believable. Changing the narrative from present to past and future was a good way to mix up the tension. We learnt a lot about the Italian experience during that time. |

The structure of the novel detracted for many, however the story was interesting. Characters a little unsympathetic for some as well. A challenging read, it made for a very interesting discussion. |

Loved this book, Nazi torture details notwithstanding. Wonderfully written - loved how well all the characters were developed. |

Our all-male group mostly enjoyed this book for the way it sustained our interest and anticipation. Many felt it should have given more about the Network's activities helping Allies escape, which were hinted at, rather than focus on the distribution of the payments for the helpers. Some felt the style - being a compilation of the participants' recollections - worked while it didn't work for some, being a distraction. |

Our group was captivated by this book. It was a book that most of us would have passed by on the book shelves. It was well-written, kept your interest and flowed. The characters were all 'pictured' and 'captivated' in our minds. Religion, politics, people and culture were all woven through the story which made this an enjoyable read. A great read. |

Really enjoyed this book and the fact that it was based on history. Could have done with a description of the people in the Choir as well as their names as a reference. |
