Slashed education budgets? Disappointing but hardly headline news, but for the community of River Valley School for the Deaf, it will be catastrophic. Focusing on Charlie Serrano, a transfer student who has never met another deaf person, Austin Workman, a student well immersed in the Deaf world, and February Waters their school principal who is valiantly trying to do her best for the students and their families, this is a powerful coming-of-age story. Empathetic and political, this novel offers fascinating insights into all elements of Deaf culture, written by an author who is deaf herself.

Very interesting reading about ASL/BSL and the history of sign language in education. The ending was a bit boring. |
