Description: Eric Blair at 19-years-old is an unknown quantity - a recent graduate of Eton, he opts to become a policeman in 1920s Burma. However, the five years he spends in the cauldron of the British Raj with its inherent bigotry and brutality sees him emerge as George Orwell, a man primed to speak truth to power through his writing. Thought-provoking and immersive, this is the ambitious coming-of-age story of a man destined to be one of the world's most influential authors.

This was a difficult read with a lot of detail. The descriptive writing was excellent but we felt that the author focused a lot on Eric Blair's failings - and the failings of colonisation by the Brits. Maybe a good editor required.

Definitely worth reading! We were all appalled by the colonial influences. Blair was such a guilt-ridden down-trodden individual; his developing awareness, both personal and political, was painfully drawn. Liked the end of the postscript: "At the time, failure seemed to me to be the only virtue".

This book divided the group. Three people absolutely loved it while others found it hard going. We thought the writing excellent and enjoyed reading about Burma. Very good discussion.
