Description:

Eric Blair at 19-years-old is an unknown quantity - a recent graduate of Eton, he opts to become a policeman in 1920s Burma. However, the five years he spends in the cauldron of the British Raj with its inherent bigotry and brutality sees him emerge as George Orwell, a man primed to speak truth to power through his writing. Thought-provoking and immersive, this is the ambitious coming-of-age story of a man destined to be one of the world's most influential authors.

This was a difficult read with a lot of detail. The descriptive writing was excellent but we felt that the author focused a lot on Eric Blair's failings - and the failings of colonisation by the Brits. Maybe a good editor required. |

Definitely worth reading! We were all appalled by the colonial influences. Blair was such a guilt-ridden down-trodden individual; his developing awareness, both personal and political, was painfully drawn. Liked the end of the postscript: "At the time, failure seemed to me to be the only virtue". |

This book divided the group. Three people absolutely loved it while others found it hard going. We thought the writing excellent and enjoyed reading about Burma. Very good discussion. |
