Description:

Originally Tatiana Caldwell, now Tatty Crowe courtesy of her new husband, Tatty is well on the way to achieving an unusual ambition for a young woman of her time: owning and operating a business. When Titus dies, Tatty takes over Crowe Funeral Services, becoming Sydney’s first female undertaker, a far cry from her circumstances when she arrived in the colony from London just a few years earlier, recently orphaned and seeking a new life. Bustling with energy and colourful characters, this is a fast-paced story of 1860s Sydney and the fascinating funeral customs of the Victorian era, written with a light touch while firmly anchored in the author’s comprehensive research.

An easy read with a good storyline. Author's notes were a big bonus. Some of us found the style a little annoying but it was worth persevering. |

An interesting story in combination with an education in the funeral rituals of 1860s Australia. |

Most enjoyed reading a good story without over analysing it – all were fascinated with the funeral/undertaking/embalming procedures etc. All were somewhat astounded by the treatment of wives, and their financial status being husband controlled to such an extent. |

Everyone in the group really enjoyed this book, and we are looking forward to the next book in the series. The history of the era was very well researched, the characters were clearly defined, and the plot was interesting. |
