Description:

Layla's best friend Sera has a bee in her bonnet about Layla's relationship with Andy. With the altar in sight, Sera repeatedly challenges Layla (who has Jamaican heritage) about her marrying a white boy, even if, curiously, they share the same family name. Throwing into stark relief the legacies of the British slave trade, this is a thought-provoking, contemporary story set in the UK, of Layla's search for racial identity, of past injustices glaringly present, and the pivotal moments when history and politics get personal.

Certainly made us think about the slave owners and who they were! |

This novel covers important questions of identity and how we deal with our history. Specifically it deals with the U.K. generation and modern day life in Jamaica. It also deals with friendship and control and when friends can be hurtful. We felt the story could have been told differently and that the early part was very childlike. |

Definitely made us think about the slave trade in new ways. Loved the Jamaican relatives :-) |
