Description:

A mishap when feeding her menagerie of pets has the elderly Matilda Reynolds off to hospital. Her initially reluctant neighbour becomes involved in helping out, and a surprising friendship develops between the nonagenarian and the equally vulnerable but appreciably younger Connie. When they and the other residents of Roseacre Close have their tenure threatened, everyone in this Worcestershire village will need to pull together. Both refreshing and poignant, this is a hopeful story of the power of community and connection, portrayed through its sensitively rendered characters.

All of our group enjoyed this book - the story, the way the people were described and the difficulties they endured. Refreshing to have a book that has so many worthwhile characters who help each other, and fight (and win) against an uncaring authority. |

Our group really enjoyed this book. A lighter read in terms of storyline and the prose used to carry it along. But it covered some interesting current social problems like lack of social housing, rural poverty, and the negative impact of second home ownership. The only negative observation was that we all felt there could have been a bit more intrigue/jeopardy built in earlier on, to grab the reader's attention, Overall, the group rated it highly though. |
