Description:
|
Under the obsessive control of their father, Safiya Sinclair and her sisters existed within the strict confines of a militant Rastafarian faith, distinguished by its rejection of 'Babylon', the corrupting influence of the Western world. However, the poverty and isolation fuel Safiya's creative talents, especially for writing poetry, and along with her determination to set her own path, provide the route for escape. Courageous and confronting, this beautifully written Jamaican memoir of fundamentalism and rebellion, from an award-winning poet, is testimony to the power of literature to enrich and change lives.

We enjoyed the poetic quality of the memoir and were fascinated by the insights into Rastafarian culture, which was new to us. At times, however, it felt repetitive and could have benefited from a tighter edit. |

This book was very well received by the group. Most knew little of the Rastafarian/Babylon struggle in Jamaica. A very well-written book. |
