Intriguing and immersive, this is a fascinating story of a strong woman dedicated to her craft, distinguished by its close attention to historical detail, and laced with a dash of magic realism.

Comments from BDS Reviewers:

"This novel is an imaginative retelling of the art of glassmaking through the centuries on the island of Murano."

"Classic Chevalier, this time with her beautifully crafted descriptions of glassmaking, the island of Murano, and Venice."

"The most creative aspect of the novel is how the author plays with time - with a clever framework to guide the same characters through several centuries."

"An intriguing story of a family, of a city, and a craft over centuries, and entwined within it is a bittersweet romance."

"Tracy Chevalier's prose is undoubtedly some of the most beautiful I've read."

"A fascinating book, with believable characters and full of historical facts and famous figures. I couldn't put it down."

"A story which spans from 1486 to the current day, but the family and close friends age very very slowly, so we follow them from the Great Plague to current day Covid. Absolute genius."

"Loved learning about glass and glssmaking, glass selling and buying, glass families, plague and war, economic flux, and the art of the glass deal."

This book was appreciated by all in our group ( a rare occurrence), with scores ranging from 4-4.5. Most appreciated the structure and character development, and the story prompted a keen desire to visit the island of Murano among those who hadn't been there before. Others would love to go back again.
