One Kāpiti neighbourhood, three different women working hard to keep their heads above water. There is Keri, a Māori single mum of Walty and Wairere, Janet, an older Pākeha woman with staunch opinions and Sera, a climate refugee along with her husband and daughter. The unexpected return of Janet's troubled son Conor sparks a strong sense of foreboding into this quiet locale... With its reverential depiction of place, its believable characters and its strong female perspective, this is a convincing and compelling story of racism, radicalisation and the redeeming nature of community.
Comments from BDS Reviewers:"This is Tina Makareti at her best. The writing is wonderful with vivid descriptions of people and place. I would love to read it again to get more out of it".
"Short chapters and double spaced lines make it easy to read".
"I really enjoyed this book! It was a great read about relationships, family and friendship and how our perceptions of people can either bond or tear apart a community".
"The book itself doesn't have big scenes of violence but deals with racism, extremist views, racially motivated and domestic violence".
"This book includes a bit of mystic/spiritualism/mythology that may not suit everyone".
"The themes here are very much on people's minds at the moment - climate change, extremism, racism and migration. Portrayed very successfully and realistically through the experience of the three characters and their families. Their stories rang true - I felt this novel deeply".
"Reading the author's note was fascinating because it showed how much the book was based on fact which increased its standing in my eyes".
"Please be brave enough to read this book, I think it should be required reading as it captures the essence of our N.Z. poverty, racial biases, and Maori connection to the land".

Despite taking a while to get into the book most group members found it a worthwhile read. Really good descriptions of the characters and many felt they'd gained a greater understanding of what it might be like for a new immigrant to N.Z. and for those living close to the breadline. It also gave us more knowledge of how a person can be radicalised by online associations, and provided thought provoking possibilities affecting our lives through climate change in the future. Great discussion came from these topics... |
