From being one of Fagin’s pickpockets to her relationship with the volatile Bill Sikes, Nancy’s life has not been easy. The gulf between rich and poor in Victorian London is stark, and try as she might, Nancy’s ambition for a better life is thwarted at every turn. In this riveting retelling of Oliver Twist, a sympathetically portrayed Nancy takes centre stage in rich and vivid detail, the story delightfully amplifying Charles Dickens’ bittersweet tale.
Comments from BDS Reviewers:"This was a really engaging read - it portrayed London and the lives of people at the time really well".
"Nancy lived what could be called a wholly grim and hopeless life, but she found joy in small pleasures that contrasted with this, creating glimmers of light in the dark".
"The book is beautifully written and I just loved the character of Nancy. She was complex, hopeful, loving, poor, trapped, scared, self reflective - and prioritised others over herself".
"You will be alongside Nancy every step of the way, and she even reveals to us a side of Bill Sikes we never see in the original story".
"The characters, especially Nancy, are primarily what kept me so engaged with this story. The author sustains narrative tension and pace throughout".

Most of the group enjoyed this book. It well reflected the circumstances and era of the original story, and the language used was authentic and interesting. For myself, it brought back memories of the musical 'Oliver'. |
