One morning, a stranger arrives in the town of Golden. No one knows who he is or where he came from…
His name is Theo and he's arrived there by chance – or has he? He visits the local coffeehouse, where ninety-two pencil portraits hang on the walls, portraits by a local artist of the people of Golden. He begins purchasing them, one at a time, and putting them back in the hands of their 'rightful owners'. With each exchange, a story is told, a friendship born, and a life altered.
A story of seeing and being seen, Theo of Golden is a beautifully crafted novel about the power of creative generosity, the importance of wonder to a purposeful life, and the invisible threads of kindness that bind us to one another. Harper Collins. Taken from the book blurb.
Comments from BDS Reviewers:
This was a great book to be tucked into during a recent storm. Easy to read and entertaining, the pages flew by. The characters are varied and fun, with some nods to reality when some louts enter the plot.
The story embraces the diversity of people in the community, and shines a light on how these people can be supported in our community by just taking the time to acknowledge difference with curiosity rather than judgement.
What a lovely book to read! A perfect book to lounge around with and dive into without any expectations.
I can't imagine anyone not enjoying this book - such a beautiful story. It shows how one man's generosity can affect others, and how a happy and positive demeanour can rub off on others, to make even the pessimists see life in a more positive way.
We all indulge in thinking how we would spend a Lotto win! So the theme of random acts of kindness is a good one. The storyline is easy to follow without twists and turns and the writing is fluid.
The reveal in the last chapters might have been expected by more perceptive readers, but it raises several discussion points.
A charming, simple book, that can't help but guide us in how to be better people.
