Description:
|
It begins with a painting won in a raffle: fifteen sunflowers, hung on the wall by a woman who believes that men and boys are capable of beautiful things.
And then there are two boys, Ellis and Michael,
who are inseparable.
And the boys become men,
and then Annie walks into their lives,
and it changes nothing and everything. Hachette. Taken from the book blurb.
Comments from BDS Reviewers:
This is an unforgettable book. The two male characters have each experienced abuse and tragedy in their childhoods, and form a close friendship when they meet as 12 year olds. Sarah Winman writes about this in a sensitive, beautiful way.
The book is wonderful to read because it lets the story unfold from the perspective of the two men. The story is very much character-driven, and the issues of sexual identity are handled sensitively.
The Sunflowers painting is such a powerful motif in the book - from the beginning when Dora bravely chooses it, to the time that Michael spends in France. Sarah Winman writes about the power of art to transform lives.
This is a powerfully written, wonderful book about friendship, and love and loss. It is a gem.
Sexual encounters between Ellis and Michael are explored, but it is not graphic or inappropriate.
This is a beautifully crafted piece of prose which uses powerful imagery and metaphors. It is not a long book, but because of how well it is written, I found myself rereading phrases in order to savour and prolong the read.
Winman's writing reflects the intensity of the characters' emotions, and her descriptions of the landscapes are just as vivid, and provide a thoughtful and seamless context for the journey.
