Comments from Groups:

Worth a read as adults. Christchurch 185

Enjoyed it but have doubts about author's sanity! Otaki 001

Looking at a 'children's book' from an adult point of view, especially knowing the background of the author, made it interesting. Auckland 006

This provoked interesting discussion - more about the life of Lewis Carroll rather than the actual book. Pirongia 001

Was good to re-read after many years and provoked a good discussion on 'good' children's literature, and differing views of children and adults. Wellington 005

We struggled to enjoy this classic due to finding out more about the author in the introduction, and also members found it bizarre and difficult to read.

Discussion disappointing - low attendance may have contributed to this! Literary aspects given high marks though.

We had a good discussion of 'Through the Looking Glass' - all enjoyed the precise prose, the illogicality of words and attitudes, and the joyful nonsense. If, as the notes infer, there was sexual symbolism in the book, it must indeed have been well camouflaged, as we couldn't find any.

Although some hadn't read it there was great discussion. A variety of comments - "Funny and entertaining, may frighten a child", "Too clever in parts for a children's book", "Looking Glass was more of a repeat of ideas" and "Was he on laudanum!"

Most loved it and some are buying their own copy. Others were not in the frame of mind for nonsense at the moment, but will probably go back to it later!

General agreement that it was interesting to read a book that so many other works have been inspired by.
