Description: With the announcement of the opening of a school for exceptional learners, the affluent community of Crystal, Colorado, moves in to high gear. The knives are out - figuratively speaking of course - but it is child pitted against child, adult against adult, to secure one of the limited places.

Narrated through the experiences of four families who had until now enjoyed well established friendships, this is an astute and entertaining story of ambition and competition and answers the question: Just how far would you go in the pursuit of advantage for your child?

Not a book we would usually pick - quite long but interesting. Very full discussion but found each question in the notes had several questions within it, so took some time to get through it all.

Mixed reaction. Challenging with small print and number of characters but those who persisted were glad they had. One member did a list of each family member and found that helpful.

Mixed reactions - didn't find Rose very credible but we have all seen elements of these behaviours!

Not universally enjoyed by our group, but we had a really robust discussion on issues within the book which makes for a good meeting. All had experiences to share regarding education whether for gifted pupils or not.

Some felt a man writing about women didn't capture the mothers' personalities and feelings very well. Overall we enjoyed the book.

An excellent book. The twist at the end surprised many. Well-written. 'Giftedness' is an important topic, and we also enjoyed the relationships between the parents and siblings. Would recommend it to others.

Group of ex teachers! We all really enjoyed this book, and of course we had many memories of similar high-power parents with "gifted" children.

We enjoyed the range of characters, which were well explored and described, enabling the reader to easily draw a picture in our minds. Also well explored and described were the connections between characters, giving depth to a story based on shallow first world issues.
