Difficult to get into. Didn't enjoy the shifting time frames.

Queenie was a disappointing read. It is the type of paperback one might expect to find at a one-star trashy resort, dog eared and covered in food/coffee stains. I have read the other reviews here and OK if you dig deep, there is the racially oppressed aspect of being Jamaican, living in Brixton and having a less than ideal upbringing. Where is the storyline - the protagonist did herself no favours with her constant casual, sometimes violent sex, and consequent trips in and out of the sexual health clinic. Frankly, she deserved to be suspended from work - did she even do any work? Rating 0.

All agreed it was a challenging read and for some the content around destructive behaviour, distressing. Very thought provoking. Discussion not as good as usual partly dictated by the few members who really didn't enjoy it.

This book was more than just "chick lit" as first thought. Provoked discussions around race and gender in today's society, and fighting stereotypes.

We enjoyed 'Queenie', but we had high expectations due to the accolades it received, which weren't met. We found it quite hard to be an observer of Queenie's self-destructive behaviour.

Good to experience a perspective from a POC; the book was emotionally hard at times but overall enjoyable.

A thought provoking book, 'Queenie' created a great discussion about how women present to the world, and how women of different ethnic groups meet different responses. The characters were written very well, the main characters evolving into well rounded, very human, people. Highly recommend.

Interesting read. Some felt it was trying too hard to be shocking. Somewhat disturbing, but led to good discussions.
