Title: Goldilocks
Authors: Lam, Laura
Genre: Fiction
Pages: 333
Year: 2020
Language: English
Description: Fuelled by the rising tides of climate change and misogyny, an all-female crew of astronauts board the world's first starship. Their destination: Cavendish, a planet in the Goldilocks zone, suitable for human habitation. At the helm is visionary Valerie Black and among her crew of five, her surrogate daughter and mission botanist, Naomi Lovelace. Naomi is committed to a better future for everyone, even if it means questioning her loyalty to Valerie.

Engaging and thought-provoking, this suspenseful story astutely highlights the political realities of our current world and the possible future of the planet, all the while weaving through a lifeline of hope.

Interesting, raised some questions. Ultimately a little disappointing.

Does absolute power corrupt absolutely? Yes.

Engrossing read, but develops a soap opera character towards the end. Enjoyable read, but unconvincing themes.

Polarising book. Some of the group loved it while others couldn't stand it.

Most of the group really enjoyed the book, while others found it hard to get into. Great discussion followed.

Interesting book which divided our group by gender - male members not distracted from the issues at the heart of the book by the strong feminist tone, while female members switched off by the "sci-fi" aspects.

Those who were able to read the book and attend the meeting loved this book. Interesting to read in the month that 'Roe Vs. Wade' was overturned!

Our group gave this story an average rating of 7/10, and were all surprised at how it kept our interest on a subject we didn't understand or expect to enjoy. Although the story changed time throughout, it was easy to follow and cleverly organised. One member felt it was so interesting she hoped there might be a further book including these characters and how they fared in the future.

Some members don't like Science Fiction, but the rest of us found it a real page turner, with plenty of topics to discuss.

Despite the 'thin' plot and writing, most of us enjoyed this as an easy read.

Not a novel many of us would have chosen, but we were pleased we read it as it produced lots of worthwhile and relevant discussion.
